Topic: Introduction to Al-Qura'n; The Holy Book
Lecturer: Imam Osama Bahloul

We will start our class with Dua'a, then prayers on Prophet Mohammad (S) صلى الله عليه و سلم - My sisters, Always whenever you hear the prayer upon Prophet Mohammad, it is very important that you repeat it.

Let's talk about our Holy Book; the Qur'an, Who are the Qur'an carriers, or Ahlu Al-Qur'an?
On the Day of Judgment there are people who are called the Qur'an Carriers, they are Ahlu Al-Qur'an, each one of them will help in forgiving 40 of his relatives who were considered as the people of the hill fire.  The Quran is the pure word of God. Not one word therein is not divine. Not a single word has been deleted from its text. The Qur'an has been handed down to our age in its complete and original form since the time of Prophet Muhammad. From the time the Book began to be revealed, the Holy Prophet had dictated its text to the scribes.  The Holy Prophet used to instruct the scribe about the sequence in which a revealed message was to be placed in a particular Surah, in other words the Prophet (S) صلى الله عليه و سلم continued to arrange the text of the Quran in systematic order till the end of the chain of revelations.

Adam was the first prophet on Earth, and Sheith (Adam's son alaihimis-salaam.) was the second prophet on Earth and lived for 1000 years.

What are the Holy Books?

Counted to be 136 book; 50 books cam on Sheith alaihis-salaam.

The most important Holy books delivered to prophets among the last generations since prophet Adam -peace be upon him- are as follows:

1. Suhuf-Ibrahim (Scrolls of Abraham/Ibrahim) (Arabic: صحف ابراهيم) which are part of the religious scriptures of Islam, and are
believed by some to be lost, and which was a holy book given by Allah to Ibrahim (Arabic: ابراهيم)
 alaihis-salaam.

2. The Injil (Arabic إنجيل ) which was a holy book given by Allah to Isa (Arabic: عيسى) alaihis-salaam.

3. Zabur (Arabic: زابور) which was a holy book given by Allah to Dawood alaihis-salaam

4. Tawrat (Tawrah or Taurat, Arabic: توراة) is the holy book given by Allah to Musa (Moses) alaihis-salaam, which is also known
as the "Five Books of Moses" or the "Pentateuch", (Arabic: ‏الخمسه ‏أسفارموسى.)

The Holy Book; Al-Qur'an came in the Arabic Language, it is, therefore, agreed by Muslim scholars that any translation of the Qur'an is not the exact word of God. Non-Arabic speaking people should be able to benefit from translations but no one should depend upon a single translation because no translation is free of errors. A translation represents the understanding or lack of it by the translator himself. If any one desires to become a scholar of the Qur'an there is no choice but to learn the Arabic language of the Qur'an and gain expertise in it.

Let's talk about the verse "Fi El-Mahdi Wa Kahlaan" in suraht "Maryam".  Fi El-Mahdi or in cradle; means a baby infant, and Kahlan or an Adult; means in the age of 30 yrs old.  Ages in all humans differ, in other words, when a man reaches the age of 30 yrs old, he is considered "Kahlaan" in the arabic language or an adult in English, when he reaches the age of 40 yrs old, he is considered "Rashidan" or a mature adult, and at the age of 50 yrs old he is "Shaykhaan"in the arabic language or an elder in English.  Also Al-Shaykh is thre different kind: A shaykh by age, or a shaykh by knowledge, or a shaykh by sattan (bad sins).  Our Arabic language is amazing, it has many different meaning, with lots of rich vocabulary, for example when we we say a person died, it will be Towifiya and not tawaffa.

According to the Muslim perspective what makes the Quran unique is:

Qur'an

  1. A protected book by Allah (SWT).  The text of the Holy Qur'an  is exactly the same as the Holy Prophet (PBUH) had offered to the world as the Word of God.  Today, this Book which God revealed to Him for the guidance of mankind is in its original language without the slightest alteration in its vocabulary, and has been perfectly preserved as it is transmitted through the ages.

{ إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ {الحجر : 9

  1. It was recorded in writing as well as in the memory of many people in the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (S).
  2. Suitable for any time, any generation, and everywhere
  3. It is the Miracle of the prophet
  4. It is not a History, Science, ..or Art book, it is all of that together.
  5. The Qur'an talks about the TAURAT, ZUBOOR and INJEEL

The Qur’an is the last revealed Book of God. It is a record of the exact words revealed by God through Angel Gabriel to Prophet Muhammad over a period of twenty-three years.   When the Angel brought the revelations, Prophet Mohammad memorized them, then dictated to his companions, and were written down by scribes. Not one word of its 114 chapters has been changed over the centuries, so that the Qur’an is in every detail the unique and miraculous text which was revealed to Prophet Muhammad.  As the Qur'an first revealed to the Holy prophet in Makkah, for 13 years, and continued after the prophet migrated to Madinah for 10 years, so there were Maki Qura'n and Madani Qur'an, let's compare and find the differences between both of them:

Makki Qura'n (Arabic: قرآن مكي) Madani Qur'an (Arabic: قرآنٌ مدني)
  1. were revealed to the Prophet Mohammad (S) in Makah for 13 years
  2. for example: Surahat Iqra' and Almudather (Arabic: اقرأ والمدثر)
  3. short surahs, because most of the Muslims are new believers and having short surahs will be easier on them to understand and memorize them.
  4. all surahs include a "Sajda", except Suraht Al-Hajj
    -(Sajda means
prostration to God in the direction of the Kaaba during the daily prayers.)
  5. focused on the pillars of Iman and how to emphasize the believe in the unity of Allah and his messenger is Mohammad (S), and forbid the worshiping of idols.
  6. did not include lots of obligations and rules, but talked about the hereafter a lot to remind new believers for their rewards and also the punishment of nonbelievers.
  7. Talked about charity, justice and forgiveness.
  1. were revealed to the Prophet Mohammad (S) in Madinah for 10 years
  2. for example: Surahat Al-baqra, AL-Imran, and Al-nisa'(Arabic: البقرة وآلعمران والنساء)
  3. long surahs
  4. includes many rules and regulations about Praying and fasting.
  5. Surahs don't include "Sajda", but Suraht Al-Hajj.
  6. talked about obligations and limits in Islam.
  7. talked about well and Islamic life rules to organize Muslims' family life and prohibit bad sins like adultery, killing for no reason, drinking any alcohol and  stealing.
  8. Some of its surahs mentioned hypocracy and the behaviors of the hypocrites, but  the first few versus of suraht Al-Ankaboot were revealed in Madinah and the rest of it in Makkah.

The Holy book in Islam

  1. is called Qura'an because the word Qur'an in the Arabic Language is driven from Iqra' which means read

  2. is called a book because it was written by hand

  3. consists of Surahas and the word surah in the Arabic language is driven from "Sour" which means Walls or fence and we always fence our houses, or maybe the whole city; in other words each surah consider to talk about a whole city; which is full of every rule or law managing the life of people living within that city.

At the end of the class, Imam Osama gave 15 minutes for questions and answers? Also he advised us to prepare for the next class which is the explanation of the first five versus of suraht Al-Nur.

The class was closed by a prayer by the Imam and his attendee.

Wa Aslamo Alykom Wa Rahmatu Allahi Wa Barakato.

Time: 11:30am - 12:30pm
Topic: Suraht Al-Nur
Lecturer: Imam Osama Bahloul

The Imam starts the class with Dua'a, then prayers on Prophet Mohammad (S) صلى الله عليه و سلم

Just to remind you again, in previous class we mentioned the meaning of the word "Surah"; which is an Arabic word driven from "Sour" which means walls or fence and we always fence our houses, or maybe the whole city; in other words each Surah consider to talk about a whole city; which is full of every rule or law managing the life of people living within that city. The meaning of Ayah is "wonder", or "obvious" because mankind is unable to produce or say something like it.  Naming the Surahs were ?Ijtihaad? depending on the reason or the explanation of the versus and what values it brings to the Islamic society.

Bismillah; means I submit and give up in all to Allah (SWT), also believe that all these versus are Allah's words.

Suraht Al-Nur includes lots of important rules and regulations for the Islamic family and the society in all, it is the Surah of social conventions and manners.  One of the major issues this Surah is talking about is rules concerning the woman in Islam as she is the basic of the Islamic family, also it is regulating people’s lives at home, seeking to maintain courteous relations between people, reaching a state of harmony and morality in the society; and shows how to purify the community from crimes and sin. .  Let's remember Al-Saydda Khadija in this story; "When the prophet Muhammad (S) was worshiping Allah in Hirra' Cave the angel Jibrael cam to him for the first time with the first versus of our Holy Book, the prophet was scared and shaking and he went back home, he was running to his wife Kadijaha (AS) shaking and scared trying to explain to her what he saw and heard, Kadijah was a very wise lady and calmed him down saying you will never be disappointed, God will always protect you, and I will find out what you saw; I am sure it is an angel not a devil or satin, Kadijah was smart enough to think about the following; she told prophet Mohammad: as soon as he comes back or it is visible to you -referring to angel Jibril- just let me know, then angel jibril appeared to prophet Mohammad and he told his wife Kahdija, she took of her head cover and  asked prophet Mohammad "is he still there?", No!! answered prophet Mohammad, and now Kadijah came to a conclusion that is definitely an angel, because angels never do bad sins as watching women with uncovered head.  Subhan Allah!

The Importance of Surat An-Nur:

  • Starts with the word "Surah"

سُورَةٌ أَنزَلْنَـهَا

A Surah which We have sent down, here Allah is starting the Surah with the word "Surah", to pointing out the high esteem in which He holds this Surah, and how these  it is important.

وَفَرَضْنَـهَا

and which We have enjoined; which means we have explained what is lawful and unlawful.
  • In this surah there were many Islamic rules to govern a whole Muslim society, those rules were liked and preferred by some individuals and not by others. It included many obligations, commands, prohibitions, the prescribed punishments upon them around you -referring to prophet Mohammad- and those who come after you.

وَأَنزَلْنَا فِيهَآ ءَايَـتٍ بَيِّنَـتٍ

  • and in it We have revealed manifest versus; which means, clearly and fully explained versus. Now a question came up; What does the word "Aya" (in Arabic: آية) means?  As I said before; in order to understand the Holy Book very well you have to learn the Arabic language and master it, Aya means in Arabic the most obvious, or clear matter.

لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ

that you may remember.

Now the Imam explained the difference between Allowed (Hallal in Arabic: حلال) and Forbidden (Haraam, in Arabic: حرام)

For example it is obligatory to wash up or make Wadu for praying (which is the act of washing parts of the body using water) so we are required (واجب) to perform wudu in preparation for ritual prayers, but also what is better or preferred (مستحب) is to give it your full attention to enter a state of purity before praying.

Then Allah says:

 الزَّانِيَةُ وَالزَّانِى فَاجْلِدُواْ كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ مِّنْهُمَا مِاْئَةَ جَلْدَة

The Zaniyah and the Zani, flog each of them with a hundred stripes. This verse contains the rule of detailed punishment on the person who commits illegal sex, or adultery. Such a person will either be unmarried, meaning that he has never been married, or he will be married, meaning that he has a lawful marriage. As for the virgin who is unwedded, the prescribed punishment is one hundred stripes, as stated in this verse, but the flogger should not show underneath his arm, so the stripes will not be that hard but still not soft on the female or male who committed this illegal sex, the main purpose of that is to teach the us the Islamic and religious reason of this punishment which is not to committed again.
In addition to this if you notice in this verse and in another verse of the Qur'an, the Adultery has been mentioned for both males and females but started with the females by saying The Zaniyah (refer to a feminine word) and then the Zani (refer to a masculine word), another example is when steeling was mentioned in one of the verse in Qur'an; it started with the stealer or thief in masculine expression then the stealer in feminine expression.  That tells what?  It tells us that in Adultery most of the blame of this sin could be on the women, but not all of it, if they took care of themselves Islamicaly, covered and behave in Islamic moralities, may be that bad sin or illegal sex would not exist.  But when talking about stealing; because this bad sin needs a physical strength, defiantly the men will be mentioned first in the verse.

It is very important that we, Muslims women, watch ourselves whenever we dress, talk, act or react, especially in the outside environment, and be careful because there could be some sick people that we are not aware of and may misunderstand our actions.

At the end of the class, Imam Osama gave 15 minutes for questions and answers? Also he advised us to prepare for the next class which is the explanation of the next five versus of suraht Al-Nur.
Conclusion from questions and advices session:

  • If someone made a mistake, insulted, or backbite you, then came to apologize to you, make sure to accept the apology, whatever the mistake was, accept the apology, because if you do not accept you will never get the chance to drink from the Holy water on The Judgment Day. As what Prophet Mohammad (SA) Said: "Who ever has been apologized to and did not accept, will never drink from the hawd on The Judgment Day".  (من تُنصل اليه فلم يقبلو لم يرد الحوض يوم القيامة)

The class was closed by a prayer by the Imam and his attendee.

Wa Aslamo Alykom Wa Rahmatu Allahi Wa Barakato.

Topic: Suraht Al-Nur
Lecturer: Imam Osama Bahloul

Always remember that Allah (SW) is watching you, so if you want to correct or advise people, start with yourself. Going back to the Adultery sin, the punishment of this sin is divided into two categories; the physical part and the psychological part.

Now, Remember that you should be careful who to know and invite to your house, because No one should eat your food but the true believer; he/she will be trusted not to say or backbite about your whatever you have in your house, even if you feed them whatever you have of food.  In other words do the best you can to protect yourself and family, and leave the rest to Allah (SW) (Arabic: لا يدخل بيتك الا مؤمن و لا يأكل طعامك الا تقي) and remember that your life is your own privacy, and whatever we have within our life we always like to keep it to ourselves, so if you do not want your privacy shield broken, make sure not to break and keep a limit away from other people privacy.

وَلاَ تَأْخُذْكُمْ بِهِمَا رَأْفَةٌ فِى دِينِ اللَّهِ
Do not feel pity for Them when carrying out the Punishment.  Here, the verse explain that as the punishment law came from Allah, so we should not feel sorry for them, in the same time it does not mean that we should not naturally feel pity when carrying out the punishment.  What is prohibited here is the kind of pity that may make the judge ignore the punishment altogether.

As what we said in last class when punishing them, lash hard without causing any wound, so that he/she and others like him will be deterred by the terror of that.

وَلْيَشْهَدْ عَذَابَهُمَا طَآئِفَةٌ مِّنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

and the punishment should be carried out in public, where a party of the believers witness their punishment, because it is more humiliating for the people who committed adultery to be flogged in front of others which will convey the sense of scandal and rebuke.  Also it will result to that they will have no credit in the community

الزَّانِى لاَ يَنكِحُ إِلاَّ زَانِيَةً أَوْ مُشْرِكَةً

In this verse Allah tells us that any male who is guilty of fornication (Arabic: الزَّانِى) can not marry any women except a female who is guilty of fornication (Arabic: زَانِيَةً) or an idolater (Arabic: مُشْرِكَة), in other word no female will accept him with this action except a sinful woman guilty of the same sin or an idolater.  In the same way, a female guilty of adultery  can not marry any man except a sinful male who is guilty of fornication, or an idolater.  Allah also forbid any male believer from marrying prostitutes, or any woman believer from marrying an immoral men.

Allah and the prophet Mohammed (S) صلى الله عليه و سلم taught us not to talk about each other and forbid back biting; so if you want to protect your privacy, keep in mind to leave people privacies outside your thoughts. In this verse those who accuse chaste women, and can not produce four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes, and reject their testimony forever except those who repent thereafter and do righteous deeds.

Also to obtain conviction of Adultery, this sin must be attested by at least four male Muslim witnesses of good character, with the accused having a right to testify and their testimony given the most weight in the eyes of the judges, and these legal procedural requirements were instituted to make it impossible to obtain conviction of this sin.

At the end of the class, Imam Osama gave 15 minutes for questions and answers.  The class was closed by a prayer by the Imam and his attendee.

Wa Aslamo Alykom Wa Rahmatu Allahi Wa Barakato.

Date: Wednesday 5/21/2008
Time: 11:30am - 12:30pm
Topic: Suraht Al-Nur; "The Efik Incident"
Lecturer: Imam Osama Bahloul

The class starts with Dua'a, then prayers on Prophet Mohammad (S) صلى الله عليه و سلم.

One of the moste important issues surat An-Nur was revealed is replying to the rumors spread by the hypocrites about Lady Aisha; the prophet wife (May Allah be pleased with her); she was accused by committing adultery, although Allah (SWT) Himself proved her innocence in the Qur’an. Let's go over the story as what has been explained by the companions and the scholars; what happened is that when Lady Aisha went with the Prophet (SAWS) in Al-Mustalaq Conquest, and the army stopped to have some rest, Lady Aisha lost her necklace when she was away from the army to refresh and rest. While she was searching for it, the men carried her hawdaj (a closed small tent placed on the camel), not thinking that she was not there, as she had a light weight. When she came back, she found that she was left alone as the army had gone.

The Prophet (SAWS) was used to keep somebody in the rear of the army, so as to guide anyone who misses it. At that time, it was Safwan Ibn Al-Mu’atal who found Lady Aisha alone, so he settled his camel and turned away so she will ride on it without speaking to her or even looking at her, until they entered Al-Madinah. The hypocrites made use of this incident to their own benefit; they began spreading rumours that Lady Aisha and Safwan committed adultery. People began to spread these false rumours, even some believers fell into the trap, and they said “No smoke without fire”. Muslims argued about that matter: some were puzzled; some did not believe it at all; and some did. No ayahs were revealed to the Prophet (SAWS) for a whole month, which  was a test for the whole society.

Shekh Osama continue the story saying: It was a hard test, indeed, which lasted until ayahs from Surat An-Nur were sent down to prove Lady Aisha’s innocence? The Revelation ceased to occur to the Prophet (SAWS) until the whole society releases all different thoughts and attitudes about that matter.  Then the versus came to clarify and prove Lady's Aisha's innocence: Allah (SWT) says: “Verily those who brought forth the slander (against ‘Aisha the wife of the Prophet) are a group among you. Consider it not a bad thing for you. Nay, it is good for you. Unto every man among them will be paid that which he had earned of the sin, and as for him among them who had the greater share therein, his will be a great torment” (24: 11).  This Ayah declares that Lady Aisha is innocent, and that what happened was flagrant lies and falsehood. Whoever contributed to spreading such lies in the society, mainly Abdullah Ibn Abu Salul, the head of the hypocrites, will have a tremendous torment.  Also the ayah comments on the slander which spread like hellfire among Muslims. Allah (SWT) says: “Consider it not a bad thing for you. Nay, it is good for you” (24: 11). How can there be any benefit or good in this?

At the end of the class, Imam Osama gave 15 minutes for questions and answers.  The class was closed by a prayer by the Imam and his attendee.

Wa Aslamo Alykom Wa Rahmatu Allahi Wa Barakato.

Date: Wednesday 5/28/2008
Time: 11:30am - 12:30pm
Topic: Suraht Al-Nur;
Lecturer: Imam Osama Bahloul

The class starts with Dua'a, then prayers on Prophet Mohammad (S) صلى الله عليه و سلم.

We will continue talking about "Tha Efik Maatter".

  1. The set of the social rules mentioned in this Surah are beneficial for all the Muslims in every part of the earth forever.

  2. “Why then, did not the believers, men and women, when you heard it (the slander), think good of their own people and say: “This (charge) is an obvious lie?” (24: 12). This is a great Ayah that teaches us how to act when rumors about others’ honor spread. The situation for which this Ayah was revealed was that Abu-Ayyub Al-Ansari asked his wife had she been in Aisha’s shoes, would she have done as the rumors said? She replied in the negative, so he told her: “And Aisha is better than you.”  In turn, she asked him, had he been in Safwan’s shoes, would he have done as the rumors said? He replied in the negative, so she told him: “And Safwan is better than you.” Thus, the Ayah praises their magnificent deed to set them as a good example for all the Muslims.

  3. The Ayah wording is “the believers, men and women, thought highly of themselves”, tells the Muslims: “Think highly of each other, exactly as you think of yourselves. You are all believers, so let the hypocrites think of you as they like.”

  4. The Ayahs inspire the feeling that one’s ill talk about one’s brother/sister in Islam is considered ill talk about oneself, and that highly thinking of brothers/sisters means defending oneself.

  5. All Muslims should be aware of harming others’ reputations, especially women; beware of listening to the devil’s whispers about it; and beware of spreading the news of scandals and rumours, which makes you think wrongly of others, falling into the great sin that the Surah mentions, which is slandering innocent women.

  6. Those who spread the false rumors, as well as those who believed them among the Muslims, had neither witnesses nor evidence. Allah (SWT) says what can be translated as, “Why did they not produce four witnesses? Since they (the slanderers) have not produced witnesses! Then with Allah they are the liars” (24: 13).

  7. Also Allah’s (SWT) mercy always precedes His anger. He (SWT) says: “Had it not been for the Grace of Allah and His Mercy unto you in this world and in the Hereafter, a great torment would have touched you for that whereof you had spoken” (24: 14).  You consider it a little thing, while for Allah (SWT) it was very great.  The Ayahs is describing the gravity of the situation. Allah (SWT) says: “When you were propagating it with your tongues, and uttering with your mouths that whereof you had no knowledge, you counted it a little thing, while with Allah it was very great; And why did you not, when you heard it, say: “It is not right for us to speak of this. Glory be to You (O Allah)! This is a great lie; Allah forbids you from it and warns you not to repeat the like of it forever, if you are believers” (24: 15-17).

The whole Islamic society, was to learn from this incident, and we too shall learn from it.  So let's summarize what we learned from this matter:

  1. All these Ayahs are commenting on the aforementioned incident, so this was a warning to the Companions of the Prophet (SAWS), and to the whole Islamic nation, against ill speaking about women’s reputations. Some young men might say a word or make a gesture in this respect; they might even be joking without aiming at harming anybody, but the Ayahs give them a clear serious warning. Allah (SWT) says: “You counted it a little thing, while with Allah it was very great” (24: 15).

  2. The Ayahs then forbid  them to repeat such an action, as Allah (SWT) says: “Allah forbids you from it and warns you not to repeat the like of it forever, if you are believers” (24: 17).

At the end of the class, Imam Osama gave 15 minutes for questions and answers.  The class was closed by a prayer by the Imam and his attendee.
